Here’s a news clip from the Halifax Pride Parade this past summer that features me. I was so happy to be on the Casino float. Being a part of pride instead of just watching, really transformed me. I was brought up believing for a variety of reasons that anyone who was LGBQTA didn’t deserve the rights they were asking for, and that they were ‘evil’. Over the years I started to become more open mind
ed, and started to build my own opinions based on my own experiences and my sense of morality. As an adult I’ve had many LGBQTA friends and family, and I knew in my heart these people were no different than anyone else and deserved equal rights and to not have to fear violence! I started watching the pride parade a few years ago. I’d always walk away with a new sense of understanding, a lot more information, and a sense of unity with my community. This year, being in the parade, was totally transformative. I found myself close to tears several times, looking out at the thousands of people who came to show their support. People from all backgrounds, families of all shapes and sizes, police and public servants… all there to show that as a city Halifax stands up for their LGBQTA citizens. Some of you may know a well known gay activist was murdered earlier on this year in our city. It was as if the entire parade was in his memory! To all my LGBQTA friends, I want you to know, so many people are ignorant, they’re taught a certain way, or they just dont understand. I know so many of these people are open loving people, they just haven’t figured it out yet. Know that there are many who support you, and that JUST by living your life and being your wonderful self, you will change minds! A lot of people asked me afterwards if I identified as LGBQTA. I explained I don’t. But that once my eyes and heart were opened to what was happening to my fellow brothers and sisters, I couldn’t be silent anymore! This was an amazing experience for me, and I thank the Casino for giving me the chance. ♥
